Visitors and locals on the same website: that is the reality for many Maine shops. The state had 6,039 retail trade establishments in 2023, against 3,662 professional, scientific and technical services establishments, and retailers in visitor areas often serve summer guests as well as residents. Their online presence has to work for someone planning a trip months ahead and for a local checking hours on the way out the door.
Small is the norm. Maine had 43,345 employer establishments, and 88.1% of employer establishments here had fewer than 20 employees. Owners often handle marketing themselves, so the most useful website is one they can update between seasons without calling a developer, with an online store or booking system that keeps working while they are busy.
Maine also has newcomers to reach: the estimated population was 1,414,874 residents in July 2025, up 3.8% from the 2020 base. People who did not grow up with local names find businesses the way visitors do, through search, maps, social media and, increasingly, AI assistants.
