North Carolina had an estimated 11,197,968 residents in July 2025, up 7.2% from the 2020 base. Fast population growth changes search behavior: newcomers have no habits yet, so they search for nearly everything, from dentists to furniture stores. Businesses with complete listings and a page for each service area pick up that demand first.
The 2023 count found 258,169 employer establishments, including 35,534 retail trade establishments and 28,189 professional, scientific and technical services establishments. Most are small teams: 84.7% of employer establishments here had fewer than 20 employees. The SBA counts 1,107,537 small businesses, which account for 44.2% of employment, a lower share than in most states. Small firms here often sell to, and compete with, large employers, and a professional website is one of the first signals those buyers check.
