Retail and professional services are almost level in New Jersey: the 2023 count found 29,729 retail trade establishments and 29,052 professional, scientific and technical services establishments. Both groups face dense competition within a short drive, so being specific pays: the exact services, towns and product ranges you cover, written the way customers search.
New Jersey had 237,968 employer establishments. Most were small, and 86.0% of the state's employer establishments had fewer than 20 employees. The SBA counts 1,051,630 small businesses in the state, accounting for 48.8% of employment. Most of these firms cannot outspend large competitors, but they can answer questions more clearly, keep pages faster and update them more often.
The population reached an estimated 9,548,215 residents in July 2025, up 2.8% from the 2020 base. That is a large, slowly growing customer base, where winning share from competitors matters more than waiting for new demand to arrive.
